Dr. Doug Fain Presented With Harry M. Klenda Award for Outstanding Council/Committee Service
During the 150th Annual Meeting of the Kansas Dental Association General Assembly on Thursday, April 29, Dr. Douglas "Doug" Fain was celebrated as the 2021 Harry M. Klenda Award winner for outstanding council and committee service.
Dr. Fain was presented with the award prior to the meeting by Dr. Allen Reavis. The award presentation can be viewed on YouTube. Dr. Reavis nominated Dr. Fain based on his leadership on the KDA COVID-19 Task Force throughout the pandemic.
About Dr. Doug Fain
Dr. Douglas Fain was born in Abilene, Texas to Dr. Robert Fain, Sr. and Nona Mae Fain. Before Doug started school, the family moved to Houston, where his dad completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Texas Medical Center.
As one of eight children, things were never dull. When the elder Dr. Fain was asked if they were Good Catholics, he would answer, “No, Bad Baptists.”
Coming from a medical family, healthcare was always the goal. Dr. Robert Fain, Sr. was orthopedic surgeon for the Houston Oilers and was joined by Dr. Robert Fain, Jr. in that role.
Doug attended Lamar High School in Houston and attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with Honors in 1975. He obtained his DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas in 1979, where Doug was active in the Psi Omega dental fraternity.
After graduation, he moved to Houston and practiced General Dentistry for two years. The appeal of Oral Surgery was too great and Doug began specialty training at Truman Medical Center/UMKC School of Dentistry from 1981-1985. This was his introduction to Kansas City and Kansas.
Unable to resist the lure of more schooling, Doug returned to his hometown of Houston and began medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and received his MD in 1988. After graduation from medical school, he completed a General Surgery internship at the Baylor affiliated hospitals in Houston. Doug then practiced oral & maxillofacial surgery in Houston at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center for two years. Doug then returned to Kansas to begin practicing oral & maxillofacial surgery in Johnson County, and has been here since.
Organized dentistry has always held an interest for Doug since he began practicing in Houston. When he returned to Kansas, he continued that interest by serving as Chair of the Oral & Maxillofacial Specialty Committee of the Kansas Dental Board and as Program Chair of the Fifth District Dental Society.
But his real interest lay in the Organization of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Doug served as President of the Kansas City Society of OMS, the Kansas Society of OMS, and the Midwestern Society of OMS. All this while serving six years as Delegate from Kansas to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons House of Delegates.
During that time he was also Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Political Action Committee. This led Doug to run for Trustee of District V of AAOMS; the Midwestern states. He served as the representative for states from Texas and New Mexico to the Dakotas and Minnesota. After serving in this capacity for four years, Doug ran unopposed for President of AAOMS, which involves serving as an officer for four years. He considers this achievement the highlight of his professional career. The ability to serve with so many talented and brilliant surgeons was truly gratifying.
Doug was elected a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and Fellowship in the American College of Dentists. Doug continues to practice in Olathe, KS with his wonderful staff providing excellent care to the people of the Kansas City metro area.
Doug met Chris Holley at the University of Texas, were married two weeks before starting dental school, and have been married for 45 years. They have three lovely daughters: Holley, an actor in Los Angeles, Snow, a conservator of paper and books in Atlanta, and Leighton, a general dentist in Charlotte. Family has always been important to Doug. This includes the family of AAOMS and the family of dentistry. But the family at home is the most meaningful accomplishment of Doug’s life.
